Irish Wolfhounds

Feeding Program

We are proponents of a raw food diet, also known as species appropriate diet.  We have found that our dogs have evidenced good health, soundness, and activity level when fed this diet.  Health issues in several rescue dogs, including allergies and symptoms of arthritis got us started on raw food.  The change in these dogs was so amazing that I immediately began to change all my dogs over to a raw food diet.  They have evidenced the benefits of raw food in a number of ways including their general health and appearance, and in their demeanor, attitude, and love of life.

Raw Food diet has a number of "fringe benefits" for the dogs.  Their teeth do not build up tartar and seldom require cleaning or other dental treatment, and their gums are strong and healthy.  Their "used dog food" has far less odor than dogs fed on processed foods.  Many dogs build up a resistance to flea infestation.  My dogs now have few, if any, hot spots; and there is less likelihood of bloat as raw food does not expand inside the dog.

VACCINATION

Vaccination for rabies is required by law, and we conscientiously comply with the law.  Other vaccinations, including distemper: we give our dogs both puppy and adult shots.  Booster shots should be given only if indicated by circumstances or by blood test.

CARE

Every Hound is a House Hound

Care for an Irish Wolfhound ranks at the low end of moderate, to my thinking.  As for any breed, you must keep the ears cleaned, nails trimmed, etc.

An Irish Wolfhound will need to be combed once or twice a week.  Since your Irish Wolfhound will be a house pet, he won't often get filthy.   I like to wash the beard with a wet washcloth occasionally, but seldom need to bathe the dog.
